LSU head coach Brian Kelly stirred the pot last month when he referred to Clemson’s Memorial Stadium as “Death Valley Junior.” In a recent response, Clemson defensive end T jiliace download.J. LSU is set to visit South Carolina to face off against Clemson in a much-anticipated season opener for both teams on August 30. Under Kelly’s leadership, LSU has yet to secure a win in a season opener and has lost five consecutive Week 1 games, dating back to 2020.
Although these two programs have only clashed four times in the past, their rivalry has intensified over the years, with each school claiming the title of Death Valley for their respective stadiums. The previous encounter took place in 2019 when LSU dominated Clemson by double digits to clinch the national championship.
Earlier this month, Kelly, who is the winningest active NCAA coach, claimed that LSU is “letting Clemson borrow the name.” In response, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney remarked, “There’s always fuel for the fire,” as reported by 247Sports arcade sports.
Clemson’s Memorial Stadium earned the nickname Death Valley back in 1948, while LSU’s Tiger Stadium was designated as Death Valley over a decade later in 1959, following LSU’s victory over Clemson in the Sugar Bowl that same year.
As for the upcoming season, Clemson is returning 16 starters, including All-ACC quarterback Cade Klubnik. On the other hand, LSU will also welcome back their standout quarterback, Garrett Nussmeier, and has secured the No. 2 class in On3’s 2025 Team Transfer Portal Rankings.
